The world is facing a lot of problems lately, one of which is environmental degradation. Human activities brings huge impact on the nature crisis which needs immediate and appropriate environmental management. Indonesia with its large population requires extraordinary resources and energy from nature, not to mention the impact of environmental pollution caused by development programs, by which is facing serious environmental problem which is worsen by years.
Environment degradation is one of the factors causing disasters, especially hydrometeorological disasters. Based on data from BNPB, throughout 2020 in Indonesia there have been 2,925 disasters. According to data compiled by BNPB, the disasters that occurred throughout 2020 were dominated by hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, flash floods, landslides, tornadoes, drought to forest and land fires. As a consequence of the huge losses and damages caused by natural disasters around the world, enormous attention is currently being paid to holistic approaches to disaster management.
The world still experiences a lot of natural disasters though stronger efforts, scientific advances, and technology have been used in order to predict, manage and overcome them. At the present time climate change is no longer an issue to be worried about, but it has already hit all over the world with an undeniable impact. The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is known to have increased drastically due to industrial activity. Changes in temperature rise on the earth’s surface, known as global warming, are believed to have triggered various changes such as rising of sea water volume and melting of layers at both poles.
With the increasing prevalence of environmental damage and the increasing number and intensity of disasters in Indonesia, steps are needed to prevent the increasing rate of environmental damage so that later it will have an impact on reducing the disasters happen. One of the efforts is to increase human awareness to conserve the environment and prevent or reduce the impact of disasters. Disseminating research results on environmental damage and disasters is an important step in environmental and disaster management. The ICoDMC is important and crucial to be held in present.
